چکیده

Tidal channels are one of the most common and prominent geomorphic features on salt marshes. Because of their much smaller resistance to water flow compared with that of the densely vegetated marsh area, well developed tidal channels often function as arteries and carry significant amount of water as well as sediments during both the flood and ebb period of salt marshes hydraulic cycle. Therefore features of tidal channels, such as their drainage densities, overall network structures and spatial distributions, as well as the geometries of individual channels, determine to a very large degree, the overall hydrology of the salt marshes, and consequently, the ecology of the salt marshes. Recently, a simple model has been developed focusing on the initiation as well as the evolution and development of tidal channels. Despite the simplicity of the model, many important features of the tidal channels development, such as the well known fact of the rapid growth and extension of the channel networks in the young and fresh marshes, and the subsequent retreat and reduction of channel networks in the mature and old marshes, have all been faithfully reproduced. The effort has also been made to delineate the relative effect of different hydraulic parameters, such the local marsh elevation, tidal range, and the flow resistance coefficient of the salt marsh vegetation, in terms of their importance to the equilibrium value of the tidal channel drainage density. The model is entirely built from the physical perspective of the salt marsh environment, namely the biological components has been compressed and simplified to two parameters, which are the vegetation encroachment rate and the flow resistant coefficient. The model can however be extended to include many key ingredient of the bio-geo-chemical interactions. The current model does provide a framework for future development of much more sophisticateds models that can capture the essencial bio-geo-complex processes of salt marshes.

Residence Times in a Hypersaline Creek: Using Salinity as a Tracer

Spatial measurements of conductivity, temperature and depth were used to study salinity variations along the principal channels of the tidal hypersaline creek network in the vicinity of Bushehr Port, Persian Gulf during three 25- tidal cycles in both warm and cold months. Salinity variations and tidal fluctuations were out of phase throughout the short inverse estuary. The salinity values in...

The role of environments with extreme ecological conditions in the reductive evolutionary development processes of animal

Different groups of animals show phenotypic characters, which have been resulted by the reductive phenomena. The examples are the absence of pigmentation; dwindle of eyes in some cave-living animals, and also the absence of scale in some fishes. These characters are often leaded to evolution of new species with special adaptation that is so called "Regressive evolution". The reductive phenomena...

Ecological assessment of Mel e Gonzeh mangrove forest by AZTI's Marine Biotic Index

AMBI is an ecological marine ecosystem indicator, which provides a more intelligent assessment of ecosystems of sensitivity and resilience, and ecological role, compared to famous diversity and dominance. This study assesses ecosystem health status from the AMBI's perspective by examining the distribution and biodiversity of macrobenthoses from mangrove of Mel-e-Gonzeh in the Bushehr province. ...

Ecological monitoring of inter-tidal mudskipper fish of the Bandar Abbas coasts by using the novel epidermal histological index

Aquatic organisms respond to environmental stresses through physiological and morphological adaptations. Accordingly, benthic fish such as the Mudskippers are often referred as bioindicators or sentinel species of aquatic ecosystems such as mangrove forests and mudflats. In the present study, during sampling from three coastal areas of Bandar Abbas (Khorabi, Khajeh Ata and Soro estuary), three ...

Sediment microbiomes associated with critical habitat of the Juvenile American Horseshoe Crab; Limulus polyphemus

Plumb Beach, Brooklyn, New York in USA is an important horseshoe crab breeding and nursery ground that has experienced substantial anthropogenic influence, including pollution, erosion and subsequent restoration. Since little is known about the relationship between sediment microbial communities and juvenile horseshoe crab survival, next generation sequencing was used to characterize and compar...
